Student, 19, dies after swerving to miss dead kangaroo

The car accident that killed a 19-year-old woman from Kirrawee on Monday night was witnessed by her friend, who was driving the car travelling behind her on Guyra Road at Guyra in the state's north.
Police say the woman who died had been negotiating a bend in the road when she swerved to avoid a dead kangaroo in the middle of her lane about 7.20pm.
She lost control of the car and veered onto the opposite side of the road, colliding with a tree.
The driver of the car behind her witnessed the accident and was also a friend, police said.
An ambulance happened to be in the area and was on the scene within two minutes of the accident, police said. But the woman who crashed suffered significant injuries and died on impact.
Her friend was not injured but was taken to Inverell Hospital where she was treated for shock. There were no passengers in either of the cars. Police have not named the woman who was killed but said she was a university student at The University of New England in Armidale.
Police from New England Local Area Command are conducting inquiries into the incident and will prepare a report for the Coroner.

OK - so for anyone who doesnt know - DONT SWERVE AT HIGH SPEED
scenario - you see an obstacle on the road (e.g. a fallen rock, a dead animal, a macca's paper bag, a human being)
step 1 - get on the brakes really hard and let your ABS do some work and stay on the road, this should wipe off significant speed.
step 2 - keep both hands on the wheel and look for your 'out' - do NOT look at the obstacle (unless hitting it is your only 'out')
step 3 - choose your path through your 'out' (and decide if you need to do anything else, radio the guys following you, call RTA to advise of fallen rocks, call WIRES about animal, call police about persons on road)
step 4 - thank God that you didnt swerve
