Weight reduction

I take the easy-to-unbolt stuff off at the track or at home before the track day. On the street I usually leave everything in for comfort. I always carry a spare tyre and tools though just because you never know what will happen! (Taken out when I'm actually on the track though)

Does it make a difference? Don't know but looks race car!

Kudos to this, I would just take out spare tyre and rear seats out just at a track day. Daily driving, just leave everything in.

Daily driving I've been leaving everything in except for the boot internal plastics as I never re installed after coilover install. Track I run stripped boot, nothing in boot like spare or tools, no rear seats and after a few passenger sessions I take out the passenger recaro (have bucket seat for driver, light as fuck).

I reckon that is a good combination if you feel like "racecar-ing" it up hahaah

But its like any thing. Why spend so much on exhaust, intake ect. And then leave all the weight in!

By the same argument why bother spending the money on intake, exhaust etc. I guarantee that if you spent that same money on track day entry fees and consumables you will end up with a much faster lap time. Whilst having just as much fun.

I always leave all the interior in, it's a street car. That's my excuse anyway .

Weight reduction. Worth it or not? What have you guys shed to save weight? Was it worth it?

dont listen to these guys Karl, weight reduction is beneficial on so many levels:

• better fuel economy
• less tyre wear
• better braking performance
• faster acceleration
• better cornering
• smoother ride comfort
• lower NVH

however, understanding how and *where* to reduce weight is critical to achieving the above sucessfully.

make a list of all the things on your car you can remove, list their weight, list their position on the car (high/low or fore/aft) and then list how important these parts you can remove are to you personally (e.g stereo; might want one, airbags; might want to die less, air con; might like to be cool, rear spoiler; might never go over 130km/h)

once you have this list - it becomes obvious what to remove...

What have you guys shed to save weight?

shed weight:
half size civic radiator
no power antenna
no rear wiper
no sunroof
no radio
no speakers
no airbox
4kg wheels
forged conrods
titanium retianers
ported intake manifold
OEM coil
KKR wheel nuts

(some of these i did not do to save weight, but for other performance reasons)

add weight
front chassis braces
fender braces (J's racing)
rear chassis braces
larger sway bar
oil cooler
bonnet struts
catch can
surge tank
MSD coil
ARP wheel studs

these lists are by no means exhaustive...

Thanks for you help tink. But one more question. Since all the easy removed weight is from the rear. Would it be worth relocating the battery there in its place?

make a list Karl - your question will only make sense holistically...

(dont forget to add the weight of the 2GA cable in if you plan to move the battery)

For track, why don't you jump on with a full interior (minus spare tyre/jack).

Then when you go back, you can decide whether you want to pull out your interior.
If you do, then you can decide yourself whether it was worth it or not.

Excuse my ignorance, but how many track days have you attended? If the answer is less than 10 then don't worry too much about weight reduction, yes it is a great performance increase for not much money but if you don't have much experience then you are just much better off focusing on track time and maintaining the car for track use.

Your car will never be as light as a CR-X anyway, just saying.

Focus on becoming a better drive and dropping lap times.
when you get to the stage that your lap times are consistant, then its time to look into dropping some weight.
Rear seats, spare tyre and carpet is a basic weight reduction process, but when you start looking at pulling off trim, all carpet, sound deadning etc, IMO its a little bit drastic if the car is only a weekend / occasional track car
