    3rd gear crunch - advice

    Hey everyone

Ok so my 3rd gear crunches only in high revs. If i granny shift its fine.

Ive done my research and its pretty much gonna be synchro. But my question is:

What is the best advice to go about this. My clutch is also nearing the end of its life so was thinking of exedy heavy duty organic with lightened flywheel.

I know labour is going to be a killer but im most likely going to have ben from ozhonda ( who is also an old friend) to do it so ill be cutting down on costs there.

If i have the gbox out, which syncrhos do i replace? its just 2nd to 3rd that crunches sometimes, but i should do the earlier gears as well?

Altogether budget wise id like to spend 1500 installed.

    Am i dreaming lol?

    Thanks in advance guys

You'll probably be able to save alot if you're able to get ben to do it, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get 1 and 2 replaced as well? that way you'll only pay once for it to be opened up?

At GPC in yennora. Old Charlie said $500 to take the gearbox out. A HD clutch + Lightened flywheel is about 1200 I think. I had a look at ORC Ogura clutches ages ago. And Im not too sure about syncros. But $1500 I think is too cheap for all that I think you need atleast 2K.

exedy clutch n light flywheel from the US for under 500 bucks.

im in no rush to do it cause its not that bad plus i only drive on weekends.

Plus 500 bucks to just take it out is crazy..backyard DIY ftw lol

Whatever you choose, do it all in one hit so you save on labour compared to taking it out then putting it back in then taking it out again

I had the same problem in 3rd gear before at high revs, had to replace the 3rd/4th gear synchro sleeves+hub pair which were the culprits. The synchro rings themselves were still 80-90% new as it turned out.

You can either buy them from syncrho tech online individually or complete sets or geniune from Honda where they only come complete ie synchro sleeve/hub/synchro rings/springs for 1-2, 3-4 and 5-R in the case of B series boxes.

I've replaced all my synchro rings with synchrotech's carbon version, yet that doesnt stop my 1st and 2nd gears to crunch at times due to the fact my 1-2 gear synchro sleeve/hub are getting worn and I didnt have the budget to replace them at time of overhauling the box.

For clutch and flywheel, exedy way too $$$ these days and nothing special either. Best deal is from ebay gripforce where you can land a fidenza flywheel with their brand of clutch ( F1 ) HD organic or ceramic complete with bearing and install tool about AUD$320-350 landed and that's for the flywheel & clutch. That sort of $ wont get you a well known brand HD clutch kit in Aust locally let alone the flywheel.

If you could get a mate who to help you R & R the box and strip the box yourselves you'll save a lot of $. R&R labour is $$$ as it as and stripping the box at a tranmission place is even more. There are lots of good resources on DIY box rebuild on the net eg: Hondatech thread posted by Honda Bull:

I managed to do mine partly at frens' workshops and in my own backyard and you dont need any specialised tools to pull the gears apart either unlike some rwd boxes; though a press will make the procedures lot easier still.

yeh my savings are going to be coming from labour costs. I have a couple friends who have workshops so taking it out and back in isnt a drama..its the installation and i wont do that myself lol..

if ben cant do it ill take it to drhnda.

regards to the clutch..ebay us has some good prices

I am also curious about this and hopefully you can clarify EG30, if a box grinds on a particular shift no matter the revs can a simple replacement of the synchro rings fix the issue or is wear of the synchro sleeve itself more often the issue? Or is pulling the box apart to look the only option?

yeah it would be good to know!

at the end of the day..as long as the box n clutch are all working 100% thats wat i care..if i have to spend an extra 500 bucks to know that my car is going to last another 5+ years at least, its an easy decision i can make.

Pretty $$$ acutally, considering $429 shipped to USA and intl shipping would be fair bit extra on top

search for ebay shop Gripforce instead
