Hi Guys
It's been a very interesting day for me with my DC2R being used for a photoshoot and article for Wheels Magazine. Got to see first hand how Wheels do a photoshoot and it's pretty full on! It shows how much work and planning is done to get cars ready and set up for a magazine photoshoot and many thanks for James and the guys at Wheels magazine to give me the chance to tag along with them for the day!
The day began with a trip to Tullamarine Airport to pick up James and Thomas who is the photographer for the shoot. The DC2R's boot space was handy to store everyone's bags and camera gear... everything just fits into the boot! :P Next stop was to West Melbourne to pick up meet the owner of a Chaterham 7. That car is just as pure as a sportscar can be! The sound coming from the Cosworth engine is simply awesome! No real roof and removable doors, it's as close to a road registered go kart! Thomas would be travelling in the Catherham 7 up to Healesville to meet the others!
It's then off to Porsche Victoria to pick up the Porsche Cayman R. Got to walk around the Porsche Showroom and check out the rides there! Waited with James until they brought out the Cayman R. Fixed bucket seats and pretty much similar specwise to a Boxster Spyder with straps for door handles, which is pretty cool I reckon!
Off we go with the DC2R following the Cayman R up to Healesville! The Cayman R just sounds awesome even from idle! A nice drive up the mountains to Healesville where we meet up for lunch and the other cars - an S15 Silvia is absolute mint condition and the other 2 press cars - a BMW M3 Pure Edition and an MX5 hardtop convertible. As you can see, all the cars chosen are pure drivers cars, no nonsense cars with good handling! Good way to test it out going up to Marysville through some nice twisty mountain roads!
There's a lot of driving for the day, the DC2R had no problems coping with the twisties, although with the wet Melbourne weather, we had to take it easy. Out on the open roads, where the traffic cleared up, we were able to open up the cars up abit. A lot of moving car shots were done, and it was an interesting experiencing seeing how moving car shots are done!
A group shot was taken after a suitable site was selected. A lot of the setup of the photos are improvised right there on the spot. I gave James the keys to drive my DC2R to give it a fang on the back roads. Vtecing it though the gears sounded amazing, the DC2R's handling shone on the twisties! Will be interesting to see the finished article on what they thought of the "retro" cars there, including the DC2R! The day concluded with the cars interiors and engine bays being shot at night! Had quite a few on lookers asking about the cars when we parked in the service station to fill up! Guess it's not everyday a country town sees a convoy of a bunch of performance cars driving around!
Many thanks to James and the staff at Wheels for letting me to tag along with them for the day and for including my DC2R for the article! Below is quick photo I took during the course of the day. I didn't get much of a chance to take many photos as we were on a very tight schedule.
As you can see from the shot above, my DC2R has the JDM Front conversion so it'll be interesting to see if people will notice. However, it's something a bit different! Can't wait to see the finished article and photos in Wheels Magazine! It's been an exciting day, as I finally get to meet the Wheels Magazine journalists whom I read their articles each month! Really nice guys and very easy to talk to. These guys are really passionate about cars and it's good to talk to a bunch of people who share the same enjoyment of cars like you guys on Clubitr!
Make sure you guys get the issue with the article with the DC2R in it, I think it'll be either next months or the month after's issue. Should be an interesting read!
I think I've fallen in love with the Porsche Cayman R after seeing it and sitting in it today!

nice story mate, but one too many exclamation marks! :P
i aspire to one day to become a motoring journalist, although it seems like such a niche industry.
it sounds like you had a ball, but unfortunately, you didn't provide any details of the M3 pure edition. Did you get to experience most of the cars?Last edited by cordz; 12-07-11, 12:11 PM.Honda Nationals, September 9-10, get amongst it!

Sorry for using too many exclaimation marks. Did the write up pretty quickly before bed as it was a long day, which began with an 5:30am wake up and didn't get home until after 11 (Had to do a quick detour to the car wash for a hose down as the DC2R was filthy with mud and dirt everywhere after driving on country roads in the rain).
The BMW M3 Pure Edition, I felt is how an M3 should be. BMW went back to basics with the M3 Pure Edition, and took out the leather seats and replaced it with cloth seats, comes only with a manual transmission and took out the electronic driver aids and other options from the standard M3. A pure drivers car, but the it still had some luxuries in there. I didn't get to drive it, but had a bit of sit in it while they were moving around the cars. I was talking to Peter Mackay from Wheels while in the M3, and he said that they couldn't pull him out of the car - he liked it so much that it was the only car he drove that day! It had power, handling and was comfortable during the drive and could seat 4 people in comfort. I think it was the most comfortable car to travel in that day! I couldn't hear my radio in my DC2R when driving, I ended up turning off the radio and ipod connector it was that loud! Same can't be said with the M3 - full climate control and ipod connectivity with a nice stereo!
It was the Catherham 7 that stole the show for the day, it was one of those cars that gets people's attention everywhere it goes! The car remained topless for the day so whoever drove it pretty much was frozen by the time they climbed out of the drivers seat!
Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to experience the cars by driving them! They were on a very light schedule and we lost a bit of time with flight delays in the morning. Was hoping to be able to experience the cars, but the most I got was to sit in each car, except for the Catherham 7. I so wanted to drive the Cayman R, but the closest I got was in sitting in the drivers seat and make engine noises to pretend I was fanging it around!
Yeah I can't wait to see the finished article and the magazine.
You guys in Sydney and Canberra should see the Green Cayman R, Silver M3 and Silver MX5 make their way up in convoy in the next two days!
