Some people love New York, while others love Jake Gyllenhaal, but do not be mistaken about this man's affection. The "I 'Heart' JDM" badge that sits on the dash of his stripped eg is not just a token, but a reminder of what Yonas represents. It is the JDM scene, and style, that this veteran has been faithful to, until this day.

Nas (as he is affectionately known as) has been a part of the car scene for years and is looked upon, by the Honda community, as a veteran and a trusted source of knowledge and information. He's been through two eg's and three engines, his latest, a built b16a tuned by Adrian Norton of Toda Australia. After being a part of big projects such as "egk20" and "BADHBT", Nas finally had the opportunity to spend some time on his own car and he didn't waste any time on a simple build project. Being a part of JDM Yard, the right parts were never far away. The long list of mods that accompany the JDM b16a engine-swap, reads like a detailed summary of Anatomy101. Here, begins the lesson.

This car has been dissected in and out and put together with one thing in mind - and that one thing does not include being a comfortable daily beater. At first glance, you don't want to underestimate the flat-wolken grey paint as a sign of weakness. This is no toy car. It is anything but. In fact, you'd be abruptly awakened by the bark from the Trust pod filter CAI when the b16 comes on vtec.

Nas is a believer in "doing it yourself", and anything that he can do himself, he will. Everything on this car (or subsequently off the car) has been personally DIY'ed by Nas. He stripped the eg shell of its interior and deadening in attempt to lose precious pounds, and then applied a VW Wolken Grey flat paint covered in layers of clear coat. Everything from the stiff Cusco Zero 2's, to a simple white-faced JDM eg6 cluster, to the Toda 3 puck Race clutch have been installed by Nas. Perhaps, the only part of the car untouched by Nas' own hands are the insides of the block, and head - which has been machined, port and polished and fitted with Type R parts. This has bumped up compression slightly, and the vtec range is now more aggressive.

When choosing which parts Yonas wanted, he needed only to open the countless brochures at his desk at JDM Yard. The JDM Yard boys (Yonas and Z10) specialise in new and used JDM and also USDM parts for, at this point in time, Hondas. Yonas is proud of some of his shinier new parts like the Buddy Club Tri-Y 4-2-1 header and dual core 32mm KOYO radiator, but even more significant is his love for rims. To this date, the rims that Yonas' humble eg has rolled on, are countless. Yonas prides himself in acquiring the very best in 2nd hand wheels, and reconditioning them to shiny as, showroom quality, and ready for his little rattle box. Let's see... Volk Racing GRN in gold w/ polished lip, Volk Racing GRN in black w/ polished lip, Sprint Hart CP in gunmetal w/ polished lip, Mugen RNR in black... need I really go on? Ok, I will. Enkei RP01 in black, Mugen MR5 in black, Enkei Racing S in black, Sprint Hart CPF-G, Wantanabe RS8, Work RS Beta, Gab Sports, Desmond Regamaster EVO, and currently on his grey little rattle box is a set of Sprint Hart CPR in white with a polished lip. I don't imagine Nas to be keeping these on for long as the self confessed "rim whore" is excited about his 4x114.3 Type R brake conversion, which will enable him to get his hands on more illustrious and rare rims.

Looking at this car, some might argue that Yonas has really taken "function over fashion" seriously. When asked what's next, Yonas had on his mind "to re-paint it Metallic Mocha from the Mazda 2". This car is built like a little race car. It looks hardcore, and without power steering and ABS, you'd better drive it hardcore. Heck, even the windscreen washer bottle has been removed to make this car as fast and as light as possible. On its current set up, with Potenza GIII street tyres, Yonas was able to run a 14.5 second pass on a very sticky WSID strip. Yonas was also able to get around Wakefield Race Track in 1:15 on Dunlop D02G semi slicks.

With the JDM ITR non SRS steering wheel in one hand, and a Mugen gear knob in the other, we take the car to 9000 rpm, thanks to the Hondata s100 programmable ecu, just one more time. We can't wait to see this quick little car in a new coat of paint, and as we end our long day out with Yonas we say our good bye's over our own mocha's and a healthy dose chinese take away.
