Review - '13 Supersprint Championship Round 2 - Sydney Motorsport Park GP Circuit

Sydney Motorsport Park GP circuit played host to round 2 for the NSW Supersprint Championship. JSCC was represented by 3 cars from Minidisc Racing Division and Zeeshans Civic. The paddock was full of competitors as well as spectators floating about to check out the supersprints and other events at Sydney Motorsport Park. The day was a little low on laps due to a session 1 oil spill at the end of the main straight and another spill just before day's end at the bottom of the hill.

Leon's Minidisc Evo had an early problem with boost. This slowed up his first session and required a bit of attention back in the pits. With the help of a few people, and in particular his tuner at Benchmark Evolution Solutions, the problem with an actuator was sorted. The following sessions resulted in blistering laps followed by more blistering laps. The Evo's best lap of 1:47.5266 smashed Leon's personal best by 3 seconds by making the most of the Hankook semis. Leon finished 23rd outright in the championship results.

Kieran was struggling for early speed in his Minidisc 350Z. Chasing laptimes to better previous PBs took all day. The car could not maximise the grip available from the Hankook semi slicks. This was eventually rectified by softening the rear sway bar and reducing oversteer. Playing around with tyre pressures to find the optimum settings were required as the tyre seemed to be overheating due to the hot weather. The 350Z squeezed in a hot lap in the last session that was packed with a lot of traffic. Kieran purposely pulled back to ensure at least one clean lap. Tyre temperature was just right to finally achieve a PB and fastest lap for the day - 1:49.850 and 2nd place in class 2C.

The Minidisc Celica driven by Tony hit the track just after the first oil spill in the blue colour group. Cars were driving quite cautiously and after the warm up lap it was time for the Celica to find some clear air by over taking a bunched up group of cars at the turn 2 hairpin. No fast laps were made in session 1 but it was an opportunity to see how bad the spill was at the end of the main straight and into the turn 1 kink. In session 2, the low powered Celica attacked the turn 1 with a slightly earlier turn in for some consistent 1:57 laps. A new PB of 1:57.2306 provided a 1st place finish in the championship class 1B.

Zeeshan took his daily driver Honda Civic to Eastern Creek for the first time. The red Civic is lightly modded with an upgraded exhaust, pod filter and coil over suspension. Session 1 was all about getting familiar with the track before a string of 1:58 laps in the second and third sessions. The final session cut off another 2 seconds for an improved PB of 1:56.1811.
